Step 1: Understand the problem

We need to estimate how many smartphones Amazon sells in India in one year.

Since we don’t have the actual data, I’ll make some reasonable assumptions and use them to get to a number.

I’m estimating the number of phones sold, not the revenue.

Step 2: Decide the approach

There are different ways to solve this.

  1. I could start with Amazon’s users and estimate how many of them buy smartphones.
  2. I could start with the total e-commerce market.

I think both of these need a lot of assumptions.

Instead, I’ll start with the total smartphone demand in India and then estimate what share Amazon gets.

This feels simpler and easier to explain.

Step 3: Break the problem

Instead of solving the whole thing at once, I’ll split it into two parts.

  1. How many smartphones are sold in India every year?
  2. Out of those, how many are sold on Amazon?

So,

Amazon Smartphones sold = (Total Smartphone Sales in India) x (Amazon's share)

Step 4: Estimate total smartphone sales

To find the total phones sold every year, I’ll think about:
